The mission of the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, is to decrease the burden of cancer in San Antonio and South Texas through personalized medicine, groundbreaking cancer research, and prevention programs focused on our unique population.

Mays Cancer Center is one of only four National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Centers in Texas and the only one in South Texas. We’ve earned this prestigious designation since 1991 because of our long-standing quality of leading-edge cancer research, including basic science and clinical studies, and exceptional patient-centered cancer care. Our efforts also include community outreach and educating the next generation of cancer clinicians and researchers for South Texas.

Our cancer experts in medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology work in teams with other cancer specialists to provide personalized treatment plans for our patients’ unique type of cancer. In addition to this team-based approach, we include our patients and their families in the care process, empowering them to take an active role. By doing so, we’re able to build a lasting relationship with our patients in a family-centered, healing environment.

Mays Cancer Center is home to the Institute for Drug Development (IDD), one of the world’s largest Phase I clinical studies programs for evaluating new cancer drugs. Additionally, the Mays Cancer Center also conducts Phase II and Phase III trials, which continue to evaluate a drug’s safety and effectiveness, and compare it with the current standard of care.

Mays Cancer Center has developed or tested more than 20 anti-cancer drugs approved by the FDA that are now standard of care and has over 180 clinical trials available to eligible patients at any given time.

The Mays Cancer Center opened its doors in 1974 as a radiation treatment center in San Antonio and was soon established as an international leader in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research. The Mays Cancer Center is an academic cancer center part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
